MMM – Blue Mound State Park
Mostly Madison Mondays – a howdoyoudo from my new hometown of Madison, Wisconsin
We bought a Wisconsin State Park pass to avoid an exorbitant daily parking fee recently. It expires not a year from purchase but at the end of the calendar year. You might be seeing a number of State Park posts here in the next couple months.
Blue Mound State Park is awesome. At least the 1.3 Mile Flint Rock Trail we traversed on Saturday is. Here, let me show you!
It was cold, windy and rainy when we arrived. Arlo was not keen on this adventure until we stepped onto the trail and saw this:
I never made such a fuss over something so gross. Well, that’s not true. Arlo was hooked from that moment on.
The forest was full of the usual verdant loveliness found in such places. Because of the heavy rain everything was spongy and saturated. Very Lord of the Rings.
There was a lot of information posted about cherts, the most interesting to me was that squirrels and mice use the holes as their pantries.
Storage is everyone’s problem.
While the trail’s initial descent was tricky, Arlo managed the entire route easily. Eagerly and energetically actually. He talked the entire time and bounced between Kris and I like a brown-haired pinball. Two of us on the other hand, were exhausted.
At the end of the trail you are “rewarded” with a tall tower to enjoy the view.
To see my child so excited and happy, out in the fresh air and enjoying the world, I had only one thought that whole morning:
You’d better nap.
