Arlo’s bedroom is a haven of comfort and quiet. Since he was born I’ve set the stage for sleep by sequestering all hard or loud toys to the playroom.
In our daily To Nap or Not To Nap Showdown I remind Arlo that he doesn’t have to sleep if he’s not tired, but he does need to quiet his body and quiet his voice for a little while. Then in my most enthusiastic yet soothing tone, I go over all his options in lieu of sleeping:
You may play with your soft animals.
You may watch your fish.
You may read your books.
You may gaze at your artwork.
Yesterday he chose a different activity.
Well played, Son. Well played.
