MMM: Door County
Mostly Madison Mondays – a howdoyoudo from my hometown of Madison, Wisconsin
Everyone I know in Madison has been to Door County, this section of Wisconsin:
It is a top vacation spot as far as numbers show. Kris and our friend Steph signed up for a half-marathon in Peninsula State Park so we too finally got to see the lovely thumb of Wisconsin. It was a four-hour drive and that was unpleasant, but I’m not here to write about that. Although when we passed the signs for the Green Bay airport Kris exclaimed, “You mean we could have FLOWN here?!?” I burst out laughing while maintaining my “Snack Monkey” car-yoga pose. You need that goldfish that’s on the floor, that one, THAT one? The one you just threw down there?!? Stretttttttch….hooooooold……breathe.
I can’t say a lot about Door County because I didn’t see much of it, but that is a story for another day and that day will likely be tomorrow. That which I did see was all beautiful landscape, pristine shoreline and crystal waters.
Though most shops and restaurants were open, it was very quiet (except for the 2700 marathoners and families). It was also cold. Cold. If you somehow didn’t feel the cold, you just had to look to the water for confirmation.
The locals were quick to proclaim, “May 3rd! Never seen anything like this!” and in turn I would think, “Locals?!?”.
Lovely part of the world despite its weather challenges; all salted cod and Lacoste, cafes, orchards and year-round Christmas shops.
Perhaps the summer will give us cause to revisit Door County, it would be nice to see her in her peak season and with fewer icebergs.
Until next time, Dear Readers!
