MMM: Portraits on Parade
Mostly Montreal Monday
Saturday morning we braved the cold and took the Metro downtown for the 64th Annual Le DéFilé du Père Noël or Santa Claus Parade. We arrived early for a curbside spot and even received Christmas spirit in the form of a shared blanket. After waiting for an eternity in toddler minutes (10), the parade started and the spectacle began.
All the performers were beaming enthusiasm and after succumbing to the realization he couldn’t catch every candy or toy tossed in the crowd, Arlo really enjoyed himself. The elves’ and ornaments’ excitement reflected in his sparkly eyes. It was one of those parenting moments that made you happy you left the house and had you wondering, hoping, that this would be the color of his first memory. I caught this in glimpses because Farrah Star, whose very name evokes sparkle, seemed to have left hers at home. She wildly vacillated between jumping up and down on my lap to sliding boneless down my lap. (I apologize to everyone whose parade video includes my “DAMNIT!” and “I’m not doing this, Farrah.”) It was too early for her to be tired but every signal was there so before Santa arrived – the Big Finale – we left. We returned home peacefully – happily even given the lure and warmth of the Metro – and proceeded to wait for Farrah to fall asleep more than two hours later (13 days in adult hours).
We’ll try to catch you next year Father Christmas, but thanks for the shine in my child’s eyes today.
Thank you Montreal for another grand spectacle and Happy Monday to you, Fellow Explorers.
